JSON Formatter & Validator

Paste your JSON below to validate its syntax, beautify it with proper indentation, or minify it to save space.

Understanding JSON Validation and Formatting

JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is the standard data format for APIs, configuration files, and data storage across modern web development. Because JSON relies on strict syntax rules, even a single missing comma or misplaced quote will cause a server or application to crash. A JSON validator is an essential utility for developers.

How the Tool Works

Our JSON Formatter utilizes the browser's built-in, highly optimized JSON object API. It performs all operations completely on the client side:

  1. Validation: We pass your string through JSON.parse(). If the syntax is valid, it converts the text into a native JavaScript object. If it is invalid, it throws an error. We catch this error and display the exact reason (e.g., "Unexpected token } in JSON at position 125") in the red error banner.
  2. Beautification: Once parsed into an object, we use JSON.stringify(object, null, spaces) to reconstruct the string. The third parameter allows us to apply standard 2-space or 4-space indentation, making nested structures readable for humans.
  3. Minification: To minify, we use JSON.stringify(object) without spacing parameters. This strips all unnecessary whitespace and line breaks, producing the smallest possible file size for transmission over a network.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why do I get a "Trailing Comma" error?

Unlike standard JavaScript or Python arrays/objects, strict JSON syntax does not allow a comma after the final item in a list or dictionary. For example, {"a": 1, "b": 2,} is invalid JSON.

Can I format very large JSON files?

Yes, you can paste megabytes of JSON data into the tool. Because it relies on the V8/SpiderMonkey browser engines, parsing is incredibly fast. However, very large strings might cause the browser textarea UI to lag temporarily while rendering.

Is my sensitive API data secure?

Absolutely. The code never leaves your browser window. There is no backend server involved, meaning no API keys or PII (Personally Identifiable Information) can be intercepted or logged.
